Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shrub anyway?

A shrub, or also known as a drinking vinegar is a unique beverage combining vinegar and fruit to create a bright, sharp beverage, not only packed with flavor but also health benefits. Although various version of shrubs have existed since the dawn of time, the American version is derived from 17th century England as a way of preserving fruits and vegetables. They slowly evolved into a common place refreshment and eventually found their way into the bar scene as a great mixer for alcoholic beverages.

Because shrubs are made from vinegar, they are shelf stable for a long period of time. Mimidae’s drinking vinegars only use organic fruits and herbs, natural sweeteners and raw apple cider vinegar with the mother. It is also important to understand the importance of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is made when live yeast is added to apple juice, turning sugar into alcohol and giving the vinegar its acidic qualities. The mother in apple cider vinegar is vital, as it contains probiotics that help strengthen your immune system. This is then added to crushed fruit creating what’s known as drinking vinegar. Drinking vinegars are very intriguing, with many articles being published detailing its potential health benefits.

How long do shrubs last?

If stored properly, shrubs will last a long time. Since shrubs have existed long before refrigerators, they are meant to stand the age of time. Store in a cool, dark place before opening and they will last up to 12 months. However, we recommend drinking it, not looking at it, so drink up there’s more where that came from! After opening, store in the refrigerator and consume within 12 weeks.

Who are shrubs for?

EVERYONE! kids, grownups, drinkers, non-drinkers; Everyone loves a good shrub!

How much sugar is in your drinks?

They do vary slightly depending on the recipe, but for the most part we only add enough sweet to accentuate the fruit component and balance the flavor between sweet and acid. For the shrubs, a serving size of one ounce contains 6-8 grams of sugar.
